The Man Behind the Mask Guy Fawkes was born April 1570 in York, England to a family of Protestants. At age 8, Guy's father died and his mother remarried a recusant Catholic. Shortly thereafter, Fawkes shrugged off his protestant ways and became a devout Catholic. At age 21, Guy traveled to mainland Europe to fight in the Eighty Years War for Catholic Spain against the Dutch Protestants. Fawkes participated in a number of conflicts, growing continuously closer to commanders that shared his desires for a Catholic rebellion in England. In 1603, Fawkes traveled to Spain to enlist the country's help for a Catholic rebellion in England, during which time he adopted the Italian version of his name - Guido. Although the court of Phillip III received Guido's visit politely, he was ultimately unable to enlist Spain's support for the cause. The Gunpowder Plot Undeterred, Guido returned to England in 1604 and connected with a small group of Catholics who conspired to assassinate King James, the Protestant King of England.
