The Mexican silver Libertad Onza was first minted in 1982 at a time when no other major world mint was producing one-ounce, pure silver bullion coins. The coin is the official sovereign coin of Mexico, and it is also the flagship coin of the Case de Moneda, or national mint of Mexico, which is a decentralized entity under the Bank of Mexico.

Libertads are extremely popular all over the world for several reasons. They are made to very high quality standards, have typically the lowest mintage of any major world bullion coin, and sport one of the most attractive designs ever to appear on a bullion coin.

The obverse of the Libertad depicts the goddess of victory, which appears at the top of Angel of Independence in Mexico City, which was built in 1910 to honor Mexico’s victory against Spain for its independence. This statute was based on Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. Two legendary Mexican mountains appear in the background. The reverse of the coin shows the current official seal of Mexico surrounded by previous versions of the seal.
